Classes

In this class, we dive into the meeting point of acrobatics and dance, where strength meets artistry. Inspired by contemporary technique, Fighting Monkey’s imaginative play, and a fearless approach to impact, we’ll discover how movement can be both powerful and fluid. The floor becomes our partner, sometimes soft, sometimes challenging, as we explore balance, creativity, and adaptability while building confidence in dance acrobatics. Expect variation, personal expression, and plenty of playful discovery as we push boundaries and expand what’s possible in movement.

This class is open to all levels, from curious movers to experienced dancers. No prior acrobatic background is required, just a willingness to explore and try new things.

Please bring comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement. Long pants and long sleeves are recommended, as we may spend time working on the floor.

This Contact Improvisation class explores partnering, somatic tools, contemporary dance, and martial arts to expand your movement vocabulary. Through somatic starting points, we learn to move sustainably, especially when shifting levels or receiving weight, to avoid unnecessary injuries. We’ll pay attention to how we enter and exit contact, communicate consent and boundaries, and offer or ask for support. From there, we can safely explore playfulness, falling and catching, momentum, off-balance, and impact. Sessions include both improvisation and simple set patterns to practise new principles progressively.

This is an open-level class, welcoming movers of all backgrounds. Whether you’re new to Contact Improvisation or already have experience in dance or other movement practices, you’ll be guided safely through exploration, connection, and creative flow.

A new choreography is introduced monthly, while foundational exercises remain steady throughout the season.

FM Improvisation and Movement Situations with Elke At Studio 8

Elke will lead task-based improvisation and Inspire by Fighting Monkey movement situations (tools & body-body).
In the improvisation work, we mine for variability: using the specificity of a task to tune our bodily self-awareness and expand our movement capacity. With the FM tools/partnered training, we work with instinctual/reactive movement and hone shared body empathy and communication skills necessary for partnered dancing. A great complementary training for dancers of all styles, this class is open level with a medium to high level of physicality.

Fighting Monkey is a longevity practice that values variability, adaptability and finding resilience by understanding our inherent relative fragility. Through curated “play under pressure” situations, we investigate strategies of observation, communication and learning and in this expand our movement capacity. It is not a fight practice, rather we fight our monkey minds.
